Engineering Connection: Designing a Workplace for Focus, Learning, and Culture

LWG Architectural Interiors, in collaboration with Smith + Andersen, designed a new 8,200 sq. ft. Ottawa office that rethinks the contemporary engineering workplace—balancing deep focus with meaningful connection.

As a leading consulting engineering firm, Smith + Andersen’s work demands concentration, precision, and technical collaboration. The design response recognizes these needs while addressing a broader shift in workplace culture: the office as a destination for learning, mentorship, and community.

A Balanced Workplace Strategy

At its core, the workplace is organized around highly functional, product-focused work areas that support the day-to-day demands of engineering teams. Individual and team workspaces are designed to enable focus, minimize distraction, and provide flexibility for different modes of work.

These quieter zones are intentionally balanced by a central, highly energized communal hub. Rather than treating collaboration spaces as secondary, the design elevates them—positioning shared environments as essential to the firm’s culture and long-term growth.

The Heart of the Office: A Flexible Hub for Learning and Connection

The defining feature of the project is the multi-functional staff lounge and training suite. Designed as the social and intellectual heart of the office, this space supports a wide spectrum of activities—from informal gatherings to structured learning sessions.

Operable partitions allow the training room to expand seamlessly into the lounge, transforming the area into a larger venue for town halls, presentations, and firm-wide events. This flexibility reflects an understanding that today’s workplaces must adapt in real time—supporting both planned and spontaneous interactions.

The openness of the space, combined with integrated technology and varied seating arrangements, encourages participation and inclusivity. Whether used for a team lunch or a technical seminar, the environment fosters engagement and shared experience.

Expressing Identity Through Design

Smith + Andersen’s brand identity is subtly and thoughtfully embedded throughout the workplace. Rather than relying on overt branding, the design uses materiality, colour, and form to create a cohesive expression of the firm’s values.

A restrained palette of greys and blacks provides a professional, grounded backdrop, while strategic orange accents—drawn from the company’s brand—introduce energy and visual continuity. Custom wall treatments, lighting elements, and graphic applications reinforce this identity without overwhelming the space.

The result is an environment that feels both refined and authentic—aligned with the firm’s commitment to engineering excellence and innovation.

Materiality and Performance

Material choices throughout the office were guided by durability, performance, and acoustic comfort. Textured wall panels and acoustic elements are integrated into key areas, supporting speech clarity and reducing ambient noise – particularly important in both focused work zones and collaborative settings.

Exposed ceilings in communal areas introduce a contemporary, industrial character while allowing for flexibility in building systems. In contrast, more controlled ceiling conditions in workspaces provide visual calm and consistency.

Polished concrete flooring anchors the design, offering both durability and a clean, modern aesthetic, while carpeted areas introduce warmth and acoustic balance where needed.

Supporting Culture Through Space

Beyond function and aesthetics, the project reflects a deeper intention: to support Smith + Andersen’s people and culture.

The workplace is designed to encourage mentorship, knowledge-sharing, and informal interaction—critical components in the development of engineering talent. By creating spaces where employees can gather, learn, and connect, the design reinforces a sense of belonging and collective purpose.

It also acknowledges the evolving role of the office in a hybrid work landscape. Rather than simply accommodating workstations, the space provides experiences that draw people in—offering value beyond what can be replicated remotely.

A Workplace for the Future

The completed office is dynamic, adaptable, and distinctly reflective of Smith + Andersen’s identity. It demonstrates how thoughtful interior design can support both the technical rigor of engineering work and the human connections that drive innovation.

Through a careful balance of focus and flexibility, the project positions the workplace not just as a place to work, but as a platform for collaboration, learning, and growth.
