Celebrating Black History Month

ARIDO Ontario

Black History Month is a time to celebrate the rich tapestry and stories of Black communities.

In 2020, ARIDO set out on a journey to understand the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). Over the last four years, our commitment to building more inclusive spaces for our members and community partners continues to be more than critical in 2025.

2025 has presented a massive shift with DEI and we are witnessing a cultural shift, not just in the working relationship and economies between Canada and the USA, but a shift in societal values. This shift can feel like a rolling back of progression in building a new future founded on social capital.

We are witnessing a time in history where the culture being cultivated is one focused on upending progress and stability for underserved and marginalized groups of communities. This upending process is quick and sharp, creating greater division and segregation in all directions.

The introduction of new and passed laws in the USA has resulted in enabling legislation that will limit further DEI initiatives and funding. These new laws in some cases, obliterate DEI funding, business practices to improve equity and the promotion of inclusive practices in the education system and employment.

Canada and the USA are also witnessing a push to halt federal government funding for DEI funding initiatives that many foundations and not-for-profits who serve and support underserved communities, like Black professionals and communities are in jeopardy. Black

ARIDO has remained committed and focused on increasing Black representation in the interior design sector through our DEI initiatives, programs and community partnerships. We must continue to recognize and celebrate the rich diversity of Black communities, past, present and future.

Our commitment to further opportunities for Black professionals and communities has never been more important. As ARIDO members, we have an opportunity to demonstrate what true leadership and inclusive community looks like. While many of us are concerned for our internal economy and the impacts this movement may have on us as Canadians, let’s ensure this moment does not distract us from the important work that is still required for all Canadians.

There are several ways we can show up for the betterment of our own country, our communities and fellow citizens.

As the “Buy Canadian” movement gains momentum in Canada, you can also focus on supporting black business here in Ontario.
