ARIDO’s recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in 2023
As ARIDO’s journey towards advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility continues, it is imperative for the leadership, Board, and staff within the organization to continue their individual and collective development.
As a first step towards Truth and Reconciliation, the Board and staff are committing to enhanced involvement related to the leaderships ongoing education and learning related to Canada’s history with its Indigenous peoples and communities.
ARIDO is grateful to partner with Shaw Contract for the 2023 program.
This partnership will bring together ARIDO and Shaw Contract representatives to experience this unique journey together in the spirit of leadership growth and advancement of EDI in the interior design sector.
Activity Outline
For 2023 Truth and Reconciliation Day in Canada, the participants will engage in the following activities:
Phase 1: Education – Truth and Reconciliation Webinar

Speaker: Sheila Grantham, Indigenous Pedagogy and Curriculum Consultant

Sheila Grantham is a Metis PhD candidate and her dissertation focuses on decolonizing education. She has over 20 years experience working with Indigenous community, national and provincial organizations.
She has previously taught courses in Indigenous studies and Human Rights at Carleton University. In her current role, she looks forward to working with the Algonquin College community to assist in providing supports, tools and resources for those wishing to incorporate Indigenous pedagogy and curriculum into the classroom.

Woodland Cultural Centre
The Woodland Cultural Centre serves to preserve, promote, and strengthen Indigenous language, culture, art, and history; bringing the story of the Hodinohsho:ni people of the Eastern Woodlands to life through innovative exhibitions and programs.
The Woodland Cultural Centre presents a screening of the Mohawk Institute Residential School.
The virtual tour video was created with local production company Thru the Red Door, and it follows the guide, Lorrie Gallant, as she gives a tour of the former Mohawk Institute Residential School. During the video Lorrie provides the history of the institution over its 140-year history.
Viewers will get to see the different rooms in the school, from the girls’ and boys’ dormitories, the cafeteria, laundry room, and other rooms throughout the building, as well as hear interviews from five Survivors of the Mohawk Institute.
The Woodland Cultural Centre delivers high quality programs centered on a Hodinohsho:ni worldview, celebrating, and sharing Indigenous cultures, languages, and art.
