2023 ARIDO AWARDS WINNERS

The ARIDO Awards Gala continues to be the industry’s premier design awards event in Ontario. We are thrilled that this year the ARIDO Awards returned to an in-person format on October 5th, 2023 at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto!

The 40th edition of the ARIDO Awards recognized projects in the categories CARE, EAT + STAY, LEARN, WORK, and the annual categories of CRAFT, DISTINCT, and PRESERVE + RESTORE.

We also took some time to reflect on the past 40 years, celebrate ARIDO’s accomplishments and milestones, and share memories and stories from the community in celebration of the rich history of the Awards.

Congratulations to all the winners!

  • Derek Buttars, ARIDO

Derek is proudly an ARIDO Registered (NCIDQ-certified) Interior Designer. He has been volunteering for ARIDO since 2003. With 15+ years experience in Interior Design and Architectural firms in Toronto and Winnipeg, he has travelled to sites across Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, Nunavut, Quebec, and Nova Scotia. Most of the 80+ projects he has collaborated on have been hospitals, shopping centres, daycares, public housing, and office spaces. He started manual drafting at age 12, always motivated by a need to learn how things are best made and drawn.

With 27+ years AutoCAD experience and 10+ years in Project Management, he has a particular passion for Architectural Detailing and Contract Administration. Some of his favourite projects are a student residence on Baffin Island, a remote First Nation’s high school, the barrier-free renovations of historic provincial judges’ chambers, a classic diner expansion, a birthing centre, and a phased hospital renovation from roof to basement.

  • Patty Clydesdale, ARIDO

Patty is a Principal of the DPAI Architecture Inc., and a Registered Interior Designer, ARIDO who brings more than 16 years’ experience in architecture and interiors. Since joining DPAI over 11 years ago, she’s made invaluable contributions to the firm’s growth with the development of a flourishing interiors division within the corporate commercial, public and post secondary design sectors.

Patty is motivated by people engagement and loves the relationship-building aspect of her profession. She gains inspiration through her values-based approach, continuous self-education, and the perspectives and lived experience of people she meets.

Inclusive design is the root of Patty’s approach, advocating openly and transparently for equitable participation and representation of people and communities affected by the design process who’ve traditionally not seen themselves in the spaces they inhabit. Patty adds meaningful input to conversations about equity and inclusion, what it means to the design process, and the resulting experiences we create.

Patty is currently Co-Chair of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee with Hammer City Roller Derby, and recently appointed by ARIDO’s Board of Management as a member of the Equity, Diversity, Accessibility and Advancement Community Outreach Sub-Committee.
