World Cities Day – October 31

🌍🏙️ World Cities Day: Embracing Sustainable Urban Futures with ARIDO 🏙️🌍

In the fast-paced tapestry of global growth and development, cities stand as beacons of opportunity and progress. However, this journey towards urban prosperity is not without its unique set of challenges. On World Cities Day, observed every October 31st, we acknowledge the significance of cities and the need to work collaboratively to address urbanization’s challenges.

The Essence of World Cities Day

World Cities Day serves as a global platform to promote international interest in urbanization and to engage the international community in exploring opportunities to address urban challenges. It emphasizes the role of sustainable urbanization as a central component to a better future.

At ARIDO, the Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario, we recognize that the interior spaces within these cities play a pivotal role in creating environments that not only look appealing but are also sustainable, inclusive, and functional.

How ARIDO Observes World Cities Day

  1. Advocating Sustainable Interiors: We believe in the power of sustainable interior design to shape the future of our cities. ARIDO encourages all interior designers to advocate for sustainable practices that reduce the carbon footprint, minimize waste, and prioritize renewable materials and energy-efficient solutions.
  2. Promoting Inclusive Design: Inclusivity is at the heart of good design. ARIDO encourages its members to design spaces that are accessible to all, ensuring that every individual, regardless of ability or background, feels welcome and comfortable in the urban fabric.
  3. Collaborations for a Better Tomorrow: Collaboration is key to overcoming urban challenges. ARIDO actively seeks collaborations with urban planners, architects, and other stakeholders to contribute to projects that showcase the seamless integration of interior design into sustainable urban development.
  4. Educational Webinars and Events: ARIDO organizes and promotes educational webinars and events centered around sustainable interior design practices. These platforms bring together experts and enthusiasts to share knowledge and insights, fostering a culture of sustainable urbanization.
  5. Highlighting Success Stories: We celebrate projects that exemplify the essence of World Cities Day—spaces that merge aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability seamlessly. By showcasing these projects, we inspire others to follow suit and contribute to building cities of the future.

Join Us in Shaping Sustainable Urban Futures

This World Cities Day, let us collectively strive to make our cities more sustainable, inclusive, and vibrant. Together, we can influence urban development positively, ensuring that our cities are not just structures of brick and mortar but vibrant ecosystems that nurture and sustain us all.

Join ARIDO in championing sustainable interior design, paving the way for cities that are not just architecturally stunning but environmentally conscious and socially inclusive.

Invisible Disabilities Week – October 16-22

Understanding Unseen Struggles: Recognizing Invisible Disabilities

In our bustling world, it’s important to remember that not all disabilities are immediately visible. As we observe Invisible Disabilities Week during the third week of October, our goal is to shed light on conditions that often go unnoticed, yet significantly impact the lives of millions.

The Genesis of Invisible Disabilities Week

Invisible Disabilities Week October 16-20

Invisible Disabilities Week was established in 2009 by the Invisible Disabilities Association. The aim was clear: to confront the lack of understanding and awareness surrounding unseen disabilities. By dedicating a week to this cause, we honor and advocate for the struggles faced by individuals dealing with conditions such as chronic pain, mental health issues, cognitive impairments, and more.

Defining Invisible Disabilities

Invisible disabilities encompass a vast array of conditions that aren’t immediately discernible upon first glance. These could range from chronic pain and mental health disorders to autoimmune diseases and neurological conditions. What unites them is their inconspicuous nature; these conditions often hide behind a facade of well-being.

Examples of Invisible Disabilities:

  • Chronic Pain (e.g., fibromyalgia, migraines)
  • Mental Health Conditions (e.g., depression, anxiety)
  • Autoimmune Disorders (e.g., lupus, chronic fatigue syndrome)
  • Neurological Disorders (e.g., epilepsy, ADHD)

The Significance of Acknowledging Invisible Disabilities

  1. Fostering Understanding: By acknowledging these unseen struggles, we promote empathy and understanding within society. Recognizing invisible disabilities encourages a more compassionate and inclusive environment for all.
  2. Advocacy and Support: Increased awareness leads to improved support systems and accommodations. It encourages the development of resources and initiatives to aid those dealing with invisible disabilities.
  3. Inclusive Design: For architects and designers, understanding invisible disabilities is paramount. It drives the creation of spaces that cater to a diverse range of needs, ensuring true accessibility and inclusivity.

Our Role as Interior Designers

As interior designers, we play a vital role in crafting environments that not only look aesthetically pleasing but are also functional and inclusive. During Invisible Disabilities Week and beyond, we commit to:

  • Designing for Universal Accessibility: Prioritize creating spaces that can be comfortably navigated by everyone, regardless of their abilities or disabilities.
  • Advocating for Open Conversations: Engage in dialogues with clients and stakeholders about the importance of inclusive design. Educate them on how design impacts individuals with invisible disabilities.
  • Staying Informed and Updated: Continuously educate ourselves on the latest research, technologies, and design strategies that enhance accessibility and inclusivity.
  • Collaborating and Seeking Input: Collaborate with experts in accessibility and disability advocacy to gain insights and integrate their expertise into our designs.
  • Prioritizing Mental Health Awareness: Recognize the significance of mental health and strive to create spaces that promote mental wellness.

This Invisible Disabilities Week, let’s join hands to champion inclusivity and understanding. By designing with empathy and considering the unique needs of each individual, we can make a lasting impact and create spaces that truly enrich lives.

Volunteer as a 1UP Mentor with Urban Minds!

We are inviting you to become a 1UP Mentor to help high school students create positive and meaningful change in their communities.

The 1UP Mentorship program provides an opportunity for professionals from any field, be it architecture, interior design, urban planning, or community engagement, to help guide a team of high school students driven to create better spaces for their communities.

These high school students form what we call our 1UP School Chapters and are led by our 1UP Fellows (high school students that have received leadership training).

Each year, these chapters identify a challenge in their community, and tackle it head-on with the design and leadership skills we equip them with, but also the guidance of professionals.

ARIDO members are invited to provide your experience and knowledge to 1UP Fellows as a Mentor.

Get involved by completing their application form by Friday, September 15th.

August 23 – International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition

On August 23rd, we solemnly observe the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. This significant day holds deep historical roots and serves as a poignant reminder of the dark chapter in human history.

The transatlantic slave trade was a horrific and inhumane practice that forcibly transported millions of African men, women, and children across the Atlantic Ocean to be enslaved in the Americas and other parts of the world. It caused immeasurable suffering, shattered families, and perpetuated the dehumanization of individuals based on their race.

The abolition of the transatlantic slave trade was a monumental milestone in the fight for human rights and dignity. On August 23rd, 1791, the Haitian Revolution began with a courageous uprising of enslaved people on the island of Saint-Domingue (present-day Haiti). This uprising marked a pivotal moment in history, as it eventually led to the liberation of Haiti and became a symbol of hope and resistance for enslaved people globally.

As interior designers, we recognize the importance of understanding history to inform our work in creating spaces that promote healing, inclusivity, and unity. Today, we stand in solidarity with communities worldwide, acknowledging the legacy of slavery, and reaffirming our commitment to fostering spaces that celebrate diversity and honor the rights and dignity of every individual.

Let us take this day to reflect, learn, and advocate for a more just and equitable world, free from the shadows of the past. Together, we can build a brighter future where compassion and understanding prevail.
