“Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fuelling an accessible and equitable world” is the theme for the 2022 International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPWD). Proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on December 3rd,1992 and celebrated world-wide, annually with each year focusing on a different issue faced by those with disabilities.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities

A disability describes a condition that is impaired in an individual; it can be cognitive, sensory, physical, intellectual or a chronic disease. Disabilities can impact people both physically and mentally and in many aspects of their daily life and unfortunately also experience a lot of discrimination.

The observance of #IDPWD is to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities. This year’s overarching theme of innovation and transformative solutions for inclusive development includes three pillars, Innovation for disability inclusive development in Employment, in Reducing Inequality and inclusive development: sport as an exemplar case.

With the International Day of Persons with Disabilities the UN wants to create discussions and actions towards a world that is more disability-friendly, and a society that is inclusive. It is important that infrastructures and commodities are prepared to cater to people with disabilities, and that they get the same rights as everyone else.

As designers of space for humans, ARIDO members have a unique view and understanding of these space related concerns. ARIDO members have the power to influence the design of spaces, incorporate barrier free and universal design principles which address these concerns, and advocate for a truly inclusive world.
